In people with dementia, pain is believed to be under-recognized and under-treated. The brain changes associated with various types of dementia have an impact on pain expressions. Many behavioral expressions that interfere with care and an individual’s well-being may be related to pain but can be misdiagnosed as psychological symptoms of dementia. Cathy Ciolek will also share several tools that can be used to help identify if pain is a root cause so interventions can be initiated. Also discussed are non-medication and pharmacological guidelines to address different pain types to improve quality of life.
